Knitting is no longer only for grandmothers or just any mothers. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other.
Different combinations of knit and purl stitches, along with more advanced techniques, generate fabrics of considerably variable consistency, from gauzy to very dense, from highly stretchy to relatively stiff, from flat to tightly curled, and so on. The knitting community, as a whole, is a warm, nurturing place. But to develop this fabric you will need some devices with which you will be able to knit with.
Various tools have been developed to make hand-knitting easier. Animals fibers include silk, but generally are long hairs of animals such as sheep (wool), goat (angora, or cashmere goat), rabbit (angora), llama, alpaca, dog, camel, yak, and muskox (qiviut). A good place to start particularly if you are relatively new to knitting to look for patterns is the yarn skein, which comes wrapped and nearly every one of these will have a pattern on it.
It doesn't all happen at once. Brainstorm, and figure out which way of teaching would be best for you and your students!
