Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. Sock-knitting machines are used to make socks.
Knitting has been around for thousands of years, and probably always will be. If a person has never knitted before, they should start out with something smaller like a hat or a towel. There are so many different fibers and needles that are used to make those different varieties of cloth pieces such as table cloths, handkerchiefs and etc.
The new stitch is now on the right needle. When children learn to knit, they also learn to set goals, stick with something until the end, and accomplish something special. Often books give step by step instructions as well as a general knitting overview.
