I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. Knitting has become very popular in recent years.
Double ribbing is the pattern is used for hems and borders for necklines or cuffs of sweaters, socks and mitts. Dpns are somewhat shorter (typically 7 inches) and are usually sold in sets of four or five. Thus, a simple way to change gauge is to use different needles, which is the basis of uneven knitting.
To form a "knit stitch" you use one needle to pull a loop of yarn through the existing stitch on the other needle. The fibers making up a yarn may be continuous filament fibers such as silk and many synthetics, or they may be staples (fibers of an average length, typically a few inches); naturally filament fibers are sometimes cut up into staples before spinning. Once you know the essentials you will be able to follow most knitting instructions which are just combinations or variations of two stitches.
Get knitting! You may also want to consider finding a local knitting group or meeting online others who share your hobby.
